this is why, this is why.. i suck

Well.

It’s been a while.  I know. ugh. Nearly over three months.

oy vey.

Here’s the thing….

I started a bunch of posts and didn’t finish them because …… well…. some excuse.

A lot has been going on.  Like, LOTS.

Tons. Oodles. Many adventures.

So, you would think I would be writing all this stuff down, now, wouldn’t ya?  Well, apparently not.

One thing I did not do over the last 3 months is watch or read anything Twilight. I know nothing about it other than it's about vampires and girly stuff or something.

But let me brief you on what’s been going down.. then .. I will go back, finish the posts I started, and then all will be right with the world. Good times all around, my friends. Oh yes, we’ll get jiggy with it.

Things that have happened and that I will expound upon.. in no particular order…

  • I had a birthday. On that birthday I moved my stuff out of BFF Jodi’s house and into a garage in KW.
  • I went to California. It was cool. No, literally. It was April. It was about the same temperature in KW as in Cali.   Also, I saw a lot of relatives in Cali and a portrait of Arnold Schwarzenegger made of Skittles. It did not change my life in any way and I had actually completely forgotten about it until this moment.
  • My car got crashed.  Not good.
  • Got back from California. Moved the next morning into my new place in the K-dub.  Unpacked et al within days.
  • Started a new super cool gig.
  • Had a party.
  • Got a new car.
  • went to my high school reunion.
  • Proved bench advertising works.
  • Didn’t write blogs. (you already knew that)
  • Discovered a cure for the common cold. Got drunk to celebrate. Accidentally threw out the answer. Back to the drawing board.
  • Then, of course,  some random stuff that I will think of as I start spewing stuff onto the computer screen  ( I know, not the best visual there.. see? out of practice….)

So, my apologies to those of you that have actually checked to see if I’ve written some stuff.. yes, you.. Stacey Thompson-Delorme.. Michelle Walker and of COURSE, Tracy Lennon…  I shall attempt to be more consistent…. as in, the consistency of rice pudding… oh, but I digress.

So yeah, I’ve been sucking.  But I’m making an attempt to make amends.  Please forgive me. (insert tearful weepy face here… preferably of a really cute sad child… that’d make ya well up…)

K. If I’m going to get caught up, I better get moving. Await the avalanche.

Life: Good. Very good.
Love: Love the new place. (see how I got out of answering that directly? Ohhhh I’m sneaky..)
Pants: I’m wearing some. That’s all you need to know for now.

It’s my birthday too! YEAH!

They say it’s your birthday

Happy birthday to you

Birthday – The Beatles (Lennon/McCartney)

Holy crap.. what a difference a year makes!

Last year… Still stuck in Barrie, trying to sell my house.. SNOWED on my birthday.. overall not one of the BEST birthdays ever (Read about it here … strictly for comparison’s sake..)

And as much as I was attempting to see the good in everything.. people who love me, yadda yadda.. silver linings.. blah blah blah.. (I jest..) It was still slightly depressing… not gonna lie.

Katy and I hung out and it was nice.. but.. at the time… no gig.. and not much else was going on either.
So.. skip ahead a year.

Today, I spent my birthday moving.. not entirely.. but some.  I moved all my things out of BFF Jodi’s house in St. Catharine’s and to my NEW PLACE in Kitchener! (Conveniently located pretty much across the street from the ex husband/kid’s house.. it’s cool.. we’re friends..) I haven’t quite moved in yet.. not till I get back from my trip.. to freakin’ California!!!

SO. I’m sure you now require explanation.

NEW PLACE!!!

In January, my sister Barb asked if I’d be interested and able to go with her to California in April.. .and it was a sweet deal.. so I said yes. In the meantime.. I’ve been doing some contract work for a company in Kitchener which has led to me spending more time there.. (and finding excuses to hang out… not gonna lie… I love the town. Oh, and my kids. Most days anyway…)

Then.. a few weeks ago.. just was checking out online some places in town.. and found a place right near my ex and the kids.. it all just FIT.

THEN.. the company I was doing work for.. asked me to come on full time!
It’s INSANE, really…

To summarize:

Today is my birthday. I moved my things from St. Catharine’s to Kitchener to my new place until I get back.

Tomorrow.. Barb and I are off to San Francisco where we will visit our aunts, uncles and cousins.. drink wine.. ride electric bikes (Yes, there are SO cool, Lara!)  take a boat tour and do many other exciting adventuresome things..

We fly back late on the 16th… and early the 17th I’ll head back to the K-dub.. because…. All my stuff that has been in storage for months will be delivered and FINALLY I will have my own place again.  Sleeping in my own bed every night is something I totally look forward to.

Then.. Monday, April 19th.. my first official day. I am the Social Media Manager for Waters Denison Internet Group.  I map out social media strategy for various clients based on where relevant conversations are happening on the internet.. then I implement said strategy.

Which means.. I Twitter and Facebook for a living. Seriously. (Okay, that’s simplifying it, but still.. WHO better suited to this gig? Really? Yeah that’s right, me… chick who updates her FB status from her physical/church/jail or wherever I happen to be… (but never the washroom. That’s just gross)

Therefore, on this birthday.. Yeah, I’m now forty fuckin’ six.. but it’s awesome. New digs back in the Kdub.. new gig… which I LOVE.. back with friends, kids, family.. AND I’m going to California to celebrate!!

However.. still no love life. Hence, still something to complain about.. 😉

Oh, and since I didn’t have a real chance to celebrate my birthday with my friends…. we’ll do that at the Housewarming party April 24th…

Life: Loving it!
Love: I am loving life… No boys. But… maybe that’s next on my karmic list? Who knows??!
Pants: Okay.. there’s been some slacking.. so maybe Barb and I should take real bikes instead of electric.. LOL

p.s. stay tuned for updates from California..

Good Fish, Bad Fish

Pisces is the 12th sign of the Zodiac and is represented by two fish swimming in opposite directions. The two fish symbolize the internal struggle of the soul within a Pisces. Often, the fish are swimming away from each other in a circle representing life after death or reincarnation. Pisces is considered a feminine or negative sign. Feminine signs are considered more passive, receptive and sensitive than masculine/positive signs.

Pisces .. the fish..

Pisces are sensitive, humane and often idealistic. People born under this sign react emotionally to everything making them compassionate and sensitive to those around them. Rather than taking an analytical approach to life, pisces react to the feelings of others and as a result can be very influential when they choose to be. In the right situaltion a Pisces can be capable of incredible deeds. The positive nature of a Pisces and the fact that they are tuned into the feelings of others makes them socially popular.
No, I have not turned this  into a Horoscope site.

I have many Pisces in my life.. always have.. somehow I am drawn to the fish.. or related to them..   However, in this particular post I wanted to address three fish who happen to be having birthdays within the same week.. three people who are very important in my life..

My sister Lara celebrates her birthday on February 24th.. as that is the day that she was born. Lara is four years younger than me and we’ve generally always gotten along.  She is a lovely, kind, wonderful and attractive person.. She’s a great wife to her husband Joe and the amazing mother to three funny, intelligent and well behaved children.  She’s a marathon runner and an Occupational Therapist in her business life.  She’s pretty and smart and does NOT look like she’s had three children. For that, I am envious, however, she is a runner and I am relatively lazy. LOL.

I can remember being about 7 or 8 and Lara went “missing”.. My other sister Barb and I went to all the neighbours looking for her and came home crying when we couldn’t find her.  She was in the basement the entire time playing quietly and no one thought to look there. I remember a picture of Lara one Christmas when she was very young.. she looked like a doll sitting on a tiny couch.  She was an exceptionally pretty child with lovely blonde hair.

When Lara was about 17, she and her 2 friends and I made a trip to Niagara Falls and stayed in a hotel.  It was a tremendously fun trip… To this day, we’ve maintained that we went to wax museums and tourist attractions (well, we DID go to the Falls..) when in reality there was, perhaps, some underaged drinking in bars across the US border.  I’m 45. I think it’s a little late for my mother to ground me. I hope.

Lara and I have not lived in the same city for many years and I regret the fact that we are not closer.  I love her sense of humour, her desire to always make other people happy.. her willingness to help others whenever possible.. her giant heart and her sensitivity and compassion for everyone around her.  I think perhaps for her birthday I might like to actually spend some time alone with her. Oh wait.. that’s more of a gift for me than it is for her… LOL

Jennifer’s birthday is February 25th.  She calls me “the new mommy”.  This stems from 2 incidents.. one being an occasion when she was dating a young man and she discovered that he had a toddler… He became indignant when we were in the Santa Claus parade and he felt she hadn’t paid enough attention to his daughter.  My response was “what the hell were you supposed to do? Jump off the fuckin’ float, pick her up and swing her in the air and scream “I’M YOUR NEW MOMMY! I’M YOUR NEW MOMMY!!” ?”  Shortly after this, Jenn revealed that her dad had a tiny crush on me and we then proceeded to discuss that if I WERE to marry her father, I would be HER new mommy.. but I wouldn’t be picking her up or swinging her around..

Jennifer recently became a mother .. to the very beautiful Ayson.  She’s a natural mother.  And, as the “new mommy”.. my status has been upgraded to “new grandma”.. kinda.. I’m not wearing any orthopedic shoes anytime soon (no offence, Mother.)

Jenn and I have had many many adventures.. nearly being killed by a giant truck on Hwy 93 in Orr Lake… various concerts, misadventures at the Stampede Corral.. Oktoberfesting.. wine, crying, laughing, boy trouble, many secrets.. .. but mostly laughing.   I cherish her friendship.

Katy was born on February 20, 1990 and turned 20 this year.  It was a bit of a tough birthday for her as she had a lot of ups and downs during her birthday week.. But I can safely say that things are on the upswing.  I wrote a very long blog about my beautiful daughter last year on her birthday which you can read if you like.

Katy is smart and beautiful and funny.  She is everything a mother could hope for in a daughter.  She’s also one of my best friends.  And she deserves everything good in life. I know she’ll get it.

All three of these wonderful women are beautiful, talented, smart, funny, sensitive, passionate, empathetic and just amazing.   I am absolutely blessed to have them in my life.  I thank the Universe for them.  I am happy and grateful for their love.

Happy Birthday Lara.  Happy Birthday Jenn.  And Happy Birthday Katy.  I hope this is the best year yet.

Oh, the Good Fish/Bad Fish?  This is how Jenn describes Pisces… part good.. and a little part bad.. or maybe the better word is adventurous…  All I know is, I pretty much only see the good.  I love you all. Happy Birthday.

Life: An adventure every day!
Love: There’s a lot in my life.
Pants: I think I need to get some new ones.

The Continuing Misadventures of Beth and Jodi

One of my best friends in the world is Jodi Crooks. Today is her birthday.IMG00649

“Please hold for an important call from Jodi Crooks” – Jodi, pretending to be her own assistant

Jodi and I met when I took a temporary gig working in the growing industry of lawn care.  She worked for the sister company and our desks were near one another.  One day we were the only people in the whole building and I was saying something to her.. and she finally looked up and said “oh! Are you talking to me?”  To which I replied “Noooooo… I was talking to the OTHER JODI… but to make SURE you know I’m talking to YOU from now on I will make sure I call you Jodi CROOKS…”  This is way funnier when I tell it in person.
From that point forward, she became JodiCrooks .. all one word.  Everyone calls her that.  I am a trendsetter obviously.  Also at that point, we became great friends.

“Do my pants smell?” – me to Jodi.. Jodi has no sense of smell

JodiCrooks and I have been through some crazy stuff together.  Divorces, unemployment, living together, tattoos, lots of laughs,  puppet shows, boys, the stupidity of boys.. being splattered by fake blood at an Alice Cooper show… concerts.. Alice, Velvet Revolver, Motley Crue, and just this week, The Fray…
We just like hanging out and chatting.. and often sit with both our laptops watching tv and MSNing each other in the same room. We are weird.
We spend at least part of the holidays together every year.  This past year it was Jodi, Katy, Josh and I for Christmas Eve and morning.. we decided that in light of our interesting “family” that would should adopt a new name.. and hence became the “Warrcrookens”.. A combination of Warren and Crooks.. the names we kept from our ex husbands. LOL.
IMG00642

Jodi and I love the word “LAUGH”.. We both collect signs that say laugh.. and we’ve now gone to the extreme of having matching tattoos done on our wrists.   It’s one of the biggest things she and I have in common….the laughter itself.   We are both pretty funny people and we love laughing.. and do it as often as possible.  Plus, the tattoo is  a constant reminder that if you can still laugh at things, you’ll be okay.  And no, it’s not a commitment ceremony thing. We both like boys. Quite a lot, actually.

“Way to take the high road by lying” – Jodi to me after not so successfully juggling 2 dates in one night.. only to run into date #1 making out with someone else at which point I pretended to be all offended.

We’re the type of people who call each other just to say something funny.  Or for me to call and sing “The Wind Beneath my Wings”… or play “Hungry Like the Wolf” over the phone because it’s on the radio… (after all, Jodi IS President of the Duran Duran Fan Club…) Or call if “Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch” come on the radio.. she loves Mark Wahlberg.
For all the laughter and the tears .. and the many bottles of wine consumed either celebrating or commiserating… for just being the wonderful, pretty hilarious person that you are…. Happy Birthday Jodi Crooks!
You are a great BFF.  Here’s to many more misadventures!
xoxo

My Little Boy is Growing Up.

Fourteen years ago today I gave birth to a baby boy.  I don’t remember much of it, but I’ll tell you what I know.

November 1st..1994. I picked up my car at the mechanics. It had been stolen in Hamilton around about October 8th… It was recovered. Repaired. I had just found out I was pregnant.

I drove away in my newly restored car. And was t-boned. Wound up 180 degrees across the street. The newly restored Dodge Shadow was toast. I got cut out by the fire department and they took me to the hospital.

To shorten this up.. my pelvis was fractured and the baby was okay. It was painful but worth it.. fast forward many months and a TON of pounds later… it`s June 8,1995. Election day for Ontario. I was in FULL ACTIVE LABOUR. And I went to vote against Mike Harris. Nuff said. I lean left at the very least.

Josh at about a year.. what a ham!

Josh at about a year.. what a ham!

So at about 3.30 I’m meeting the daughter’s bus from school. A neighbour says “when ya havin” that baby?”  I say.. any minute.

The daughter gets off the bus. We go to the house. My water breaks. My five year old daughter thinks I’ve pee’d on the couch. The water is yellow. Not clear. That’s not good. However. I am trying to shorten the story.

I end up at the hospital and I have to have a Caesarian Section. The baby is transverse (butt down). So thankfully,  he didn’t ingest meconium (he may have ended up brain damaged).   But during the procedure it got tense.  I lost a lot of blood. We both could have died.  They had to put me out because he was “stuck”.  And hence, why I don’t remember much.

I’m shortening it up. I don’t want to be too depressing.

Therefore… after some struggles, Joshua Sade James Warren was born. June 8, 1995. 7 lbs, 2.5 oz. and 21 inches long.    They thought he had been over 10 pounds at one point before he was born, but had lost weight due to some medication I was on.  He had collapsed lungs and had to reside in the Neonatal Care Unit for the first week of his life.

He is named Joshua as that is a name his father always loved. Sade is his Great Grandfather’s name.  Sade’s 80th birthday party was June 4, 1995 and many asked if I was having the baby that day. I said “only if you have a knife”.  He did NOT want to come out!

James…a take on his dad’s name .. which is legally Jamie. not James. Nor any form thereof. But James sounded good.aladin

Once he was home, Joshua got over his medical problems very quickly and gained a pound a week for about 10 weeks .. he was a robust, happy child. I called him my “chunky monkey”.  He was an adorable little daredevil in his Buzz Lightyear pyjamas.. diving off my dresser and onto the bed yelling  “To infinity and beyond!”

Joshua is my boy.  He is the child that my mother wished for .. .to pay me back for all the trouble I caused as a child. I love him to pieces.

Now, I know everyone thinks that their child is the cutest thing ever. But seriously, Josh really was adorable. Oh, he still is… for a teenager. As a young child he loved “The Little Mermaid” and had to watch it many times a day until the song “Under the Sea” made me slightly insane.  He had a penchant for putting on “shows”.  We’d come home to the living room rearranged into a theatre .. complete with refreshments.. and proceed to dress up and perform interpretative dance to the soundtrack of Titanic… or perhaps Josie and the Pussycats…. or maybe a little something from Aladdin.. complete with fez.surf

When he was a little older he took tap and jazz for a few years and completely stole the show.  He’s always been a showman… a ham.  He’s the kid who crowd surfed at a concert at the age of 9.  He’s fearless.

Don’t get me wrong.. he’s not always been the best kid in the world.  He’s gotten into more than his share of trouble.  But it’s his birthday so I won’t point out all the bad stuff. 😉

Josh is very smart. When he was in grade 4 he could do his sister’s high school math.  He would actually ask his teacher for MORE HOMEWORK (just math.. not the rest..)  He’s extremely entertaining.  He’s kind (although he pretends to be kind of a jerk.)  He’s a very good singer.. he was one of the few kids who ever got a solo in choir.  He’s musical .. he took guitar for a while and was very good.. and now he wants to take piano.ham

Josh is also easily one of the funniest people I know. He’s incredibly politically incorrect.  Which really was unsettling to many when he was younger.. but now that he’s getting older he’s really growing into his sarcastic sense of humour.  I have no idea where he gets it from…..  He’s also extremely good with money (this I TRULY do not know where he gets it from..) and is looking to get a social insurance number so he can start working this summer.  Any of his major purchases (like his PS3) he’s saved up for himself.

Joshua has been through much considering he’s only been around 14 years. His sister calls him her hero.  He’s more fun to be around than most adults I know.  The hardest part of me living in Barrie has been that I don’t get to see Josh every day.  He makes me laugh hysterically. He’s always had the ability to cheer me up when nothing else could.  He’s taller than me now.   He’s a track star.. came in first in 200 and high jump recently.  He’s good looking .. just don’t tell him he looks like his father.

josh

Josh… I miss you every single day that I don’t see you. And I wish I could be with you on your birthday.  Wow. You’re 14.  That’s crazy considering I’m pretty sure that yesterday you were falling on the sidewalk and crying for mommy to make it better.  But now you’re growing up. Way too fast I might add.  But, I guess these things happen.

Happy Birthday Joshie.  I love you more than you’ll ever know.

Life: All life is good.
Love: I love Josh.
Pants: Headed out with the dog soon. Mocha also wishes Josh a Happy Birthday and says she loves him best.
