What’s in a Name?

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet … – Romeo & Juliet, William Shakespeare

According to Shakespeare, what matters is what something IS, not what it’s called.  I understand the sentiment behind this famous quote, but I’m not sure I agree.  After all, does Norma Jean Baker sound anywhere near as sexy as Marilyn Monroe?  Or would you buy a product called “The Baby Shaker”? (no, it didn’t shake the baby, it was a device for pregnant women to put on their belly to apparently stimulate the fetus.. it bobbled around and played music and stuff.. but I digress.)

name –noun 1. a word or a combination of words by which a person, place, or thing, a body or class, or any object of thought is designated, called, or known.

My birth name is Elizabeth Ann Kubilius.  Elizabeth means “house of God”.. Ann means “gracious” and Kubilius is Lithuanian, the english translation being “Cooper” effectually.. a barrel maker.  Warren is my ex-husband’s last name. I kept it because most people in my line of work never knew me by my maiden name.  I’ve been Beth Warren for a long time. Plus I worked hard on perfecting the signature…

The Evil Genius

The Evil Genius

I’ve always been called Beth as my mother did not want kids calling me “Lizzie” because to her it sounded like an old car. I’ve also had various nicknames.. Bethy-poo.. Kubby, the Wolf, Prez, Funniest Girl in the World, Evil Genius… plus have been called the requisite terms of endearment.. honey, sweetie, pooky, gorgeous, love, snooks… etc..  I have many friends who call me Bethany for some reason. Which I quite like.   If someone calls my house and asks for Elizabeth, I have a tendency to say I’m not home as it’s usually someone trying to sell me something.. they obviously don’t KNOW me… not even my mother calls me Elizabeth.  My father claims that he wanted to call me Victoria Regina.  Yikes.  I have to wonder what I would have turned out like if I had been “Vicki” all these years.

“The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their right names” – Chinese Proverb

I have several relatives who changed their names.. my aunt Milda changed her name to Laura; aunt Donna changed hers to Halisjah.  My mother’s birth name is Dora (don’t tell her I told you..) but she’s always gone by Sheila.. can’t imagine any of them with anything other than the names they call themselves.

“Words have meaning and names have power”- Thomas Jefferson

Names have great meaning.. when most go to name something, whether it be a baby or a puppy or a company, they think long and hard about what sounds pleasant and what that name will convey.  And think about when you were younger and someone got tagged with an unfortunate nickname, and how that person was perceived from that point forward.  Or even when in the heat of anger someone calls another “stupid” or “jerk” or worse.. names can certainly be far more painful than a punch in the face.  By calling someone a name, you’re labelling them. Whether you mean to or not. Call yourself whatever you like.. but think about what names you use for other people.  And maybe call them “friend” a little more often.

“We could learn a lot from crayons; some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, while others bright, some have weird names, but they all have learned to live together in the same box.” – Unknown

Life: Lots of stuff happening.. I’ll let you know soon.  The newest?  New blog.. EVIL GENIUS.. check it out.  Hence the name rant.. more on names on the new blog….
Love: I love when people call me nice things.
Pants: Still in pyjama pants. Yeah, I rock.

What Are You Afraid Of?

I was recently with a group of people when for some strange reason the conversation turned to crazy fears and phobias.  In particular, the fear of midgets or dwarves. (this is called Lollypopguildophobia by the way…)

At this point in the conversation I had to explain to them the difference between midgets (please, no offence intended to those who are “little people” or vertically challenged or whatever the correct terminology is these days) and dwarves.  Midgets or “little people” are overall smaller in stature than people of average height.. yet everything is in proportion.  Dwarfism is when the head and torso are  what is perceived as “normal” stature and the limbs are shorter and not in proportion with the rest of the body. There are many different types. But I digress.

I have run across several people lately who are ridiculously afraid of “little people”.  To the point where they can’t watch “Little People, Big World” or what have you.  They seem to think that if they look the wrong way at someone of short stature that he or she will attack them, or steal their gold or cast an evil spell upon them.  Apparently, too many Grimms’ Fairy Tales growing up.2000400ERF101

The many conversations I’ve had about what scares people have revealed some pretty interesting fears and phobias.  I know several people who are afraid of clowns (Coulrophobia – hey, Johnny Depp has this so you’re in good company..)  a friend who has a fear of balloons (globophobia) and the loud noise that accompanies their demise (could also be ligyrophobia – fear of loud noises).  I know someone with Anthrophobia – Fear of flowers… Podophobia is the fear of feet..  there are a lot of unusual fears that people have.  Including…

  • Arachnophobia – fear of spiders – many many have this.  I just don’t love them is all.
  • Dutchphobia- Fear of the Dutch – World Cup 2006 – A sea of Orange Clad Drunk Dutch. I understand.
  • Ephebiphobia – Fear of teenagers – every parent I know has this..
  • Equinophobia – Fear of horses – I had this when I was young.  I told people I was allergic.
  • Enochlophobia- Fear of crowds – an understandable one
  • Gamophobia – Fear of marriage – I know a LOT of men who suffer from this one…
  • Gardengnomeaquirophobia. – A fear of Garden gnomes. Really.
  • Glossophobia – Fear of speaking in public – many have this. Me? not so much
  • Genuphobia – Fear of knees – interesting. very odd. but interesting.
  • Geliophobia – Fear of laughter – that would be AWFUL
  • Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia – Fear of long words- looking at that, why wouldn’t you be?
  • Ophidiophobia – Fear of snakes – not uncommon
  • Porphyrophobia – Fear of the color purple – the movie or the play?
  • Pteromerhanophobia – Fear of flying – why should one be afraid of being hurled through the air at thousands of miles per hour in a metal tube?
  • Rupophobia- Fear of dirt – rarely occurs in small children. particularly toddlers.
  • Scolionophobia – Fear of school – plenty of teenagers suffer from this malady
  • Technophobia – Fear of technology – if you are reading this.. YOU HAVE BEEN CURED!
  • Walloonphobia- Fear of the Walloons – I have no idea what a walloon is.
  • Zemmiphobia- Fear of the great mole rat – That DOES sound scary…

Now, everyone is afraid of SOMETHING. I can’t think of anything offhand that I am petrified of.. not a fan of rodents or axe murderers,  and if I was confronted with a ghost (Spectrophobia) I’m sure I would be as frightened as Scooby and Shaggy.  However, I don’t have anything that cripples me to the point where I can’t function or leave the house.  And many do. I’ve seen them on Maury Povich.

However, I think everyone has a basic fear of failure.. Atychiphobia.  And sometimes that is more crippling than anything. It causes you to play it safe, to not try to live out your dreams… to not go for that “big job” or life altering decision.  Or in some cases, it prevents you from trying at all.  Or procrastinating.  Fear is misuse of your imagination. So instead of worrying about how you might fail.. think about what it will be like WHEN you succeed.

“I don’t believe in failure. It’s not failure if you enjoyed the process.” – Oprah Winfrey

So, why not just go for it? After all, what are you REALLY afraid of?

Life: Little bit of a conversation with myself there.. in case you missed it. 😉
Love: Not afraid of it.. maybe a wee bit leery..
Pants:  I wish I had a little more  Obesophobia – Fear of gaining weight.  Perhaps that would get me more in gear!

You can check out more fears and phobias on these websites.. www.phobialist.com  www.unusualphobias.com www.listofphobias.org

My Little Boy is Growing Up.

Fourteen years ago today I gave birth to a baby boy.  I don’t remember much of it, but I’ll tell you what I know.

November 1st..1994. I picked up my car at the mechanics. It had been stolen in Hamilton around about October 8th… It was recovered. Repaired. I had just found out I was pregnant.

I drove away in my newly restored car. And was t-boned. Wound up 180 degrees across the street. The newly restored Dodge Shadow was toast. I got cut out by the fire department and they took me to the hospital.

To shorten this up.. my pelvis was fractured and the baby was okay. It was painful but worth it.. fast forward many months and a TON of pounds later… it`s June 8,1995. Election day for Ontario. I was in FULL ACTIVE LABOUR. And I went to vote against Mike Harris. Nuff said. I lean left at the very least.

Josh at about a year.. what a ham!

Josh at about a year.. what a ham!

So at about 3.30 I’m meeting the daughter’s bus from school. A neighbour says “when ya havin” that baby?”  I say.. any minute.

The daughter gets off the bus. We go to the house. My water breaks. My five year old daughter thinks I’ve pee’d on the couch. The water is yellow. Not clear. That’s not good. However. I am trying to shorten the story.

I end up at the hospital and I have to have a Caesarian Section. The baby is transverse (butt down). So thankfully,  he didn’t ingest meconium (he may have ended up brain damaged).   But during the procedure it got tense.  I lost a lot of blood. We both could have died.  They had to put me out because he was “stuck”.  And hence, why I don’t remember much.

I’m shortening it up. I don’t want to be too depressing.

Therefore… after some struggles, Joshua Sade James Warren was born. June 8, 1995. 7 lbs, 2.5 oz. and 21 inches long.    They thought he had been over 10 pounds at one point before he was born, but had lost weight due to some medication I was on.  He had collapsed lungs and had to reside in the Neonatal Care Unit for the first week of his life.

He is named Joshua as that is a name his father always loved. Sade is his Great Grandfather’s name.  Sade’s 80th birthday party was June 4, 1995 and many asked if I was having the baby that day. I said “only if you have a knife”.  He did NOT want to come out!

James…a take on his dad’s name .. which is legally Jamie. not James. Nor any form thereof. But James sounded good.aladin

Once he was home, Joshua got over his medical problems very quickly and gained a pound a week for about 10 weeks .. he was a robust, happy child. I called him my “chunky monkey”.  He was an adorable little daredevil in his Buzz Lightyear pyjamas.. diving off my dresser and onto the bed yelling  “To infinity and beyond!”

Joshua is my boy.  He is the child that my mother wished for .. .to pay me back for all the trouble I caused as a child. I love him to pieces.

Now, I know everyone thinks that their child is the cutest thing ever. But seriously, Josh really was adorable. Oh, he still is… for a teenager. As a young child he loved “The Little Mermaid” and had to watch it many times a day until the song “Under the Sea” made me slightly insane.  He had a penchant for putting on “shows”.  We’d come home to the living room rearranged into a theatre .. complete with refreshments.. and proceed to dress up and perform interpretative dance to the soundtrack of Titanic… or perhaps Josie and the Pussycats…. or maybe a little something from Aladdin.. complete with fez.surf

When he was a little older he took tap and jazz for a few years and completely stole the show.  He’s always been a showman… a ham.  He’s the kid who crowd surfed at a concert at the age of 9.  He’s fearless.

Don’t get me wrong.. he’s not always been the best kid in the world.  He’s gotten into more than his share of trouble.  But it’s his birthday so I won’t point out all the bad stuff. 😉

Josh is very smart. When he was in grade 4 he could do his sister’s high school math.  He would actually ask his teacher for MORE HOMEWORK (just math.. not the rest..)  He’s extremely entertaining.  He’s kind (although he pretends to be kind of a jerk.)  He’s a very good singer.. he was one of the few kids who ever got a solo in choir.  He’s musical .. he took guitar for a while and was very good.. and now he wants to take piano.ham

Josh is also easily one of the funniest people I know. He’s incredibly politically incorrect.  Which really was unsettling to many when he was younger.. but now that he’s getting older he’s really growing into his sarcastic sense of humour.  I have no idea where he gets it from…..  He’s also extremely good with money (this I TRULY do not know where he gets it from..) and is looking to get a social insurance number so he can start working this summer.  Any of his major purchases (like his PS3) he’s saved up for himself.

Joshua has been through much considering he’s only been around 14 years. His sister calls him her hero.  He’s more fun to be around than most adults I know.  The hardest part of me living in Barrie has been that I don’t get to see Josh every day.  He makes me laugh hysterically. He’s always had the ability to cheer me up when nothing else could.  He’s taller than me now.   He’s a track star.. came in first in 200 and high jump recently.  He’s good looking .. just don’t tell him he looks like his father.

josh

Josh… I miss you every single day that I don’t see you. And I wish I could be with you on your birthday.  Wow. You’re 14.  That’s crazy considering I’m pretty sure that yesterday you were falling on the sidewalk and crying for mommy to make it better.  But now you’re growing up. Way too fast I might add.  But, I guess these things happen.

Happy Birthday Joshie.  I love you more than you’ll ever know.

Life: All life is good.
Love: I love Josh.
Pants: Headed out with the dog soon. Mocha also wishes Josh a Happy Birthday and says she loves him best.

My Mother Would Be Proud

Remember when you were a kid and just starting school … and each day you’d come home and tell your mom about your day.. all the colouring and playing and cut n’ paste you did.. and your mom would ask “but did you make any new friends?”

Because aside from your “work”, Mom realized that the important thing was friendships, other people and social interaction.  That if you had friends to share all your work with and your day with, and your life with… everything else seemed much more easy and fun and pleasurable.

During my time in Central Ontario, I haven’t made a ton of friends here.  Mostly because for months now I’ve known that I was eventually leaving Barrie and heading back to Southern Ontario.  I’ve kept busy on my own… but in the last couple of months I’ve made more friends in Barrie than I did for the most of the 16 months I’ve been here.. and most have been through social media.

I have been a Facebook afficianado for years (see my post about Facebook) but just became a Twitter fan in the last 4 months.  And of course, became somewhat addicted to it.  I quite enjoy it.. I like trying to think of witty things to say that reflect what I’m actually doing.  Yes, at times I embellish slightly to make it slightly more amusing, but for the most part, it’s at least based in reality.  I’ve enjoyed “meeting” other people via Twitter and being exposed to new people via the interweb.

I’ve made a few friends that live far away.. @IKnowKyleFord and @jmoneyallday are a couple of good examples. They both live in California and maybe we’ll never meet.. but in the meantime we have very fun conversations about the strangest things and it’s highly amusing. (Please note that these are young men far outside my dating stratosphere but in no way shape or form does that make me a cougar. If I am to be an animal, it’s a wolf,  a la Harvey Keitel’s character in Pulp Fiction. Look it up. I take care of stuff. Nuff said.)

Regardless. I had the pleasure to make some “Barrie” friends through Twitter.  At one point, a “Tweet Up” was organized but I couldn’t go.. then another was organized and I made plans to attend. Thursday, June 4th. I would actually meet people I talked to online.

We were to meet at the Mansion .. on the patio. Long story short (that is usually indicative .. for me.. of a story getting longer) the Mansion patio was not open. So apparently several “tweeps” showed up.. it was closed.. they went home.  However, the one gentleman who arranged the whole she-bang (please note that I suggested the location.. not his fault it did not work..) and I had exchanged cell numbers so once we figured out it was a bust, he called me.  The conversation basically went like this … “still thirsty?” said Jon. I said “ALWAYS”.   So we met for a drink.

@Jon_Aston and I have only talked through Twitter. Oh,  and we became Facebook friends. So we had some form of interaction. Which warranted a hug when we finally met.

We met at Fitzy’s.. and got some drinks. And exchanged histories.  The big “tweet up” became me and Jon sharing a couple of drinks. And a lot of great conversation (which means mostly me talking.. LOL) and just.. fun.

Good times. Good laughs.  And social interaction.Jon and I thought of an evil plan (I’m not an evil genius for nothing) to work Twitter to get others to come meet us for drinks next time… mostly posts about us going to strip clubs (my posts) and some other stuff I shouldn’t post (also mine…mostly about shooters and bad dancing and frolicking in fountains..).  Jon’s were about friendship and camraderie and the like. I am being kind. His wife might read this.

Regardless. Great chat. Great fun. And Mom… I think I made a new friend.

Life: All good
Love: I love making new friends
Pants: not that kind of post! for shame!

A Little Bit is A Lot.

Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little.  ~Edmund Burke

One of my favourite things in every career I’ve had (there have been a few..)  is that I’ve had the ability to assist others in some respect.   At one point I worked in not-for-profit and loved it.  During my time in the music business, I organized fundraising events, concerts, food drives and other helpful things.  Often, these were the “best” parts of my job.

As well as my media/marketing experience, I also have a background in Volunteer Management.  I have both been a volunteer (Girl Guides, Scouts, etc) and organized volunteers.  I enjoy the experience of helping others.  Most of the time when I’ve ended up helping out, it’s because someone had to do it. It’s as simple as that.  We need a parent to work the book fair.. well, someone has to.. I have the time and ability.. so sure.  I’ve had a bunch of charitable experiences.. from sitting on volunteer boards and committees to  being a Brownie leader.. to sponsoring a child in another country.  My experience with volunteering, or with assisting anyone for that matter, is that you don’t do it with any expectation for yourself other than a genuine desire to help.

In about the same degree as you are helpful, you will be happy.  ~Karl Reiland12for12k-banner3-1

A couple of weeks ago, one of my Twitter friends, Jon Aston (@Jon_Aston on Twitter) was looking for “ten good people” to help out with The 12 for 12K Challenge.  I had seen the logo on Twitter in various peoples’ profile photos and noticed it on their Twitter pages, but really didn’t know a heck of a lot about it, so I asked about it.  And I asked Jon what he wanted these “ten good people” to “do”.

The 12 for 12K Challenge is the brainchild of Branding and Social Media Expert Danny Brown.  The concept is very simple. Using social media the participants would raise $144,000 in 2009.  Each month a different charity would be the recipient of the funds raised.

At this point, I’d just like to say that I’m not writing this with the intention of saying “Look at me! I’m so great!” (Hey, we all know I do that every day anyway…. plus, most of you already know how awesome I am since I tell you regularly, but I digress…)

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.  ~Winston Churchill

Here’s why I’m writing this:  all I had to do was commit $10 a month. Seriously. $10. And of course, it would be nice if I could spread the word about the movement. So I said yes.  I can do $10.  Not hard to find.  A few less Tim Horton’s coffees.  A couple less beer, one less bottle of wine..  (ok, let’s not get ridiculous)…

The point I’m making is this.  I’m unemployed at the moment.  It’s $10. That’s all. If I can do it, so can you. Part of my reason for joining in is that I feel I haven’t done ENOUGH lately… and I figured I could use the good karma.  But whatever the reason, it’s a simple thing to do. $10 once a month. Easy. It’s just a little bit… but if everyone does a little bit, it will be a LOT.

This month’s charity is UNICEF.  So, what are you waiting for?  Go now! I’m not joking.  Click on the links! Donate! Honest, you’ll feel good.  www.12for12K.org  You can donate via credit card or by PayPal.

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.  It’s not.  ~Dr. Seuss

Life: Nothing to report other than I have already made my $10 donation!
Love: See above.
Pants: Lots of dog walking this week. Yay!

According to these results, you’ve been dead for weeks…

I was speaking with someone the other day about the state of the economy, among other things.  She had just lost her job and we were comparing war stories.  She asked me what was the scoop with me and I gave her the Reader’s Digest version… changed jobs, moved 2 hours away from my kids, had a relationship break up, bought a house, lost the job I moved for…put house up for sale, preparing to move AGAIN, had some illness in the family…

“Oh my god! It’s a wonder you’re not dead!” she exclaimed.  “You have had pretty much the entire top 10 most stressful things that can happen in your life all in one year!”

That kind of got me to thinking… yes, it has been very stressful. That’s part of the reason I started blogging.. well, other than to keep me off internet dating and online poker sites.  I felt that if I was going through some major life changes, maybe by writing about these things I could laugh it off.. maybe learn something about myself.  On occasion I can be mildly amusing…. as for learning stuff.. well.. that I’m not sure of.  I can be a little thick…

“The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” – Mark Twain

No, I’m kidding. I’ve learned many things.. I’ve learned who my friends are, for sure.  Oddly, I’ve made a bunch of new friends out of the circumstance.  So there are plusses and minuses.  Good points, bad points.. but I think you’re picking up what I’m throwing down…

Needless to say, I thought I’d look up the most stressful things and found this stress test… and another couple of them.  I did several versions. And they all had pretty much the same outcome.

• 300 and over High susceptibility to stress-related illness
Daily practice of relaxation skills is very important for your wellness. Take care of it now before a serious illness erupts or an affliction becomes worse.

Yup. Good to know. My score was 661.   Apparently, I should have died of a massive stress related coronary by now.

I sat there and starting thinking about why I wasn’t more stressed… maybe I SHOULD be feeling more stress..?  Shouldn’t I be laying in a puddle on the floor weeping about now?  Or am I in a constant state of denial?

I looked up stress relievers and found some interesting information.  Nothing too wacky or out of the box, but I few that I’m going to try because I haven’t… perhaps they will help some.  Oddly, I have unknowingly been doing some without really thinking about it as stress relief… walking..exercising..  journalling/blogging..trying to eat better.  But number 11.. Laughter.. is likely what has kept me (relatively) sane.  That and the friends who provide me with aforementioned laughs. laugh

“An optimist laughs to forget, a pessimist forgets to laugh.”- Tom Boddett

Laughter has always been a big part of my life.. it’s one of my favourite things, really. Likely why I had crushes on comedians rather than rock stars.  I collect signs that say LAUGH.. they’re all over my house.  I’ve had enough misery in my life for several lifetimes.. and I’ve chosen laughing over crying.  And as a constant reminder, I recently had my own personal LAUGH sign tattooed on my left wrist.

“A thing derided is a thing dead; a laughing man is stronger than a suffering man.” – Gustave Flaubert

So I shall continue to try to maintain my optimism through laughter since it appears it’s the only thing keeping me out of the grave.  If whatever doesn’t kill you truly makes you stronger.. then I’m Herculean.
